Philip Slaughter seeking position on the Orange & Alexandria Railroad as he has been "deprived of my profession in consequence of the unexpected termination to the war & the loss of our glorius cause." He further comments "God had a purpose in scourging us which I cannont now see, but it will doubtless be revealed in the future." Letter, 1915 May 3, Elmer Irving Carruthers to L. G. Hoxton regarding raise in salary of $50 a year as a University of Virginia professor of physics.
